Why It's Now Or Never

It will be hard to get back

I joked yesterday about the “storylines” leading up to this Super Bowl.

I think one of the reasons this particular matchup is lacking drama is because it feels like both teams are already playing with house money.

No one expected Drake Maye to take the leap this quickly and certainly no one expected a Sam Darnold-led team to make it this far.

But I think the inverse is where we find the true stakes for this game

Time to Win The Super Bowl is Now

It is going to be very difficult for either of these teams to win another Super Bowl anytime soon so they better do it now.

Think about the AFC. Patrick Mahomes isn’t going away. The Ravens will regroup. The Bills will eventually figure out how to acquire an impact WR. Joe Burrow will stay healthy for a full year …

The same goes for the NFC. The Eagles will rediscover their offensive mojo. The Niners will get healthy (and scary) again. Jayden Daniels will come back stronger. The Lions will beef up …

Darnold has been terrific, but what happens when he has to play a road game against a good team?

History will be kind to the team that takes care of business on Sunday. History doesn’t care about strength of schedule. All that matters is winning this single game.

But it won’t be so kind to whoever loses … because we might all forget they were even here in the first place.

Here are eight things that have happened 60% of the time every time during the regular season. (OK, I said 60, but these vary between 58.8%-64.7%, because nothing divides evenly into 17! F*ck off, nerd).

Fantasy Impact of New NFL HCs and Play Callers

Pencils down, everyone. Nothing else to do. All 10 NFL head coaching vacancies are filled. Seriously, there’s so much more to do, and it goes beyond those 10 teams with new HCs. There are seven more teams that have had some change to either the OC or offensive play caller. With only one of those teams with the same play caller—Joe Brady just moved up a chair in Buffalo—that’s still half the league that are changing the people pushing the buttons and dialing up plays every Sunday in the fall. Ian Hartitz took on the tall task to break down those teams with new people calling the shots on the field. One hire that has many people fired up is Mike McDaniel joining the Chargers:

“While McDaniel's passing game has a LOT of room to grow thanks to the natural talents of Justin Herbert, the run game is where we could really see some immediate fireworks. With all due respect to Greg Roman, McDaniel has largely done nothing other than enable lethal rushing attacks during his time in the NFL. It wouldn't be surprising to see high-end RB1-worthy production from Mr. Omarion Hampton as this offense's workhorse back.”

A big, speedy back in a McDaniel scheme? Sign us up! And with new head guys in Arizona and Las Vegas (going to be official after the Super Bowl), it’s time to start diving in to see if these changing of the play-calling guards can impact us in fantasy. Yes, we know all the Raiders and Brock Bowers fans are dreaming of the talented TE getting fed the same way Kubiak did Jaxon Smith-Njigba in his monster 2025 season. ⤵️
