Updates On Five QB Battles

Is Beck good??

We are getting a pretty nice discount on both Jeremiyah Love and Trey McBride this year … and it’s largely because everyone is afraid of the late-season QB situation in Arizona.

But after the Hall of Fame game, it might be time to consider the unthinkable …

What if Carson Beck is actually decent or even #good?

He looked legitimately good on Thursday, which made me realize we are due for a check-in on the handful of QB battles that are brewing across the league.

NFL QB Battles

Cardinals (Beck vs. Jacoby Brissett) - Brissett will definitely be the starter Week 1, but we still have him projected for only 12 games. The most encouraging takeaway for me here is that maybe we don’t need to be quite as scared of what happens when Brissett is inevitably benched to take a look at the rookie. I’m clicking Love and McBride with confidence in Round 3.

Falcons (Tua Tagovailoa vs. Michael Penix) - Penix still isn’t cleared for full team drills as he continues to recover from his ACL injury, which means Tua is the safest bet for starting Week 1. This is a pretty inconsequential battle for fantasy considering neither would be a starter outside of 2-QB and Superflex leagues and both should be able to get the ball to the guys we care about.

Browns (Deshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders) - Recent reports lean toward Watson having the edge and he’s been getting more first-team snaps. The org has been telegraphing the intention to start Watson in Week 1 all year … but there’s basically no way it lasts. We have Watson projected for 7 games and Sanders for 10. Similar to the Falcons, no need to touch either of these outside of QB-heavy formats.

Vikings (Kyler Murray vs. J.J. McCarthy) - I’ve previously called “cap” on this being a real battle, but the team continues to say it’s an open competition. I still strongly believe Murray will be the Week 1 starter, but there is some late-season bench risk if the Vikings aren’t in contention. He’s still a great redraft target, though, because the upside is clear and you can easily ditch if he ever loses the gig.

Raiders (Kirk Cousins vs. Fernando Mendoza) - We know that Cousins is going to start Week 1 and we know that Mendoza isn’t going to ride the pine long. We are currently projecting him to take over around Week 5 or 6. Neither of these guys are on the managed redraft radar, but I don’t mind Mendoza with Brock Bowers in best ball stacks.

We’ll keep you posted …
