😭 Brutal Injuries Alter Fantasy Landscape

In today’s Fantasy Life Newsletter presented by Motley Fool:

Injuries are part of the game, but yesterday was a particularly awful day.

Four fantasy superstars suffered injuries of varying degrees during Sunday's action.

Here's everything you need to know:

🚑 Breece Hall (knee)

Not long after ripping off a long TD run, the electric rookie RB suffered a knee injury that forced him to leave the game. The initial diagnosis is "not good," and coach Robert Saleh indicated that it's likely an ACL injury. That would, of course, end his season and thrust Michael Carter back into fantasy relevance. I'm sick to my stomach thinking about the monster games we will be deprived of, but at least he's in good spirits:

🚑 DK Metcalf (knee)

Metcalf was carted to the locker room with a knee injury and subsequently ruled out. There are some informed opinions out there that this could also be an ACL, but we'll need to wait for the MRI today to know for sure. Marquise Goodwin (4-67-2) would become very relevant if Metcalf misses time.

🚑 Mike Williams (ankle)

Williams officially "sprained" his ankle yesterday, but if you saw the injury live, you know that wording doesn't do it justice. The good news is the Chargers have a bye next week, but the bad news is this is likely a multi-week injury.

🚑 Amon-Ra St. Brown (head)

Just when he was getting back to full health from an ankle sprain suffered in Week 4, St. Brown exited Sunday's game vs. the Cowboys in the first quarter with a concussion. He's now in the concussion protocol and at risk of missing Week 8.

🍺 1. Josh Jacobs dominates the Texans

We knew Jacobs was going to crush this weekend, but even we didn't think he would crush this hard:

Jacobs continued his unreal heater and now moves to the RB2 on the year in points per game. Next up: the New Orlean Saints, who just got beat up on the ground by Eno Benjamin and the Cardinals.

🍺 2. Joe Burrow & Ja'Marr Chase vs. the world

They weren't in the familiar confines of the Superdome, but Burrow (481 yards & 3 TDs through the air; 3-20-1 on the ground) and Chase (8-130-2) did it again. Burrow was slinging it around all day, and Tyler Boyd (8-155-1) also got in on the action in a big way. Maybe try blitzing him next time, Falcons??

🍺 3. Danny Dimes keeps rolling

He was one of the cheapest QBs on the DFS slate, but Daniel Jones (202 yards & 1 TD through the air) delivered an elite fantasy performance, largely thanks to 107 yards and 1 TD on the ground. The Giants moved to a 6-1 record as coach Brian Daboll continues to get the most out of this misfit squad. Oh, and the Wan'Dale Robinson breakout is here. Lots of big games ahead for him.

🍺 4. The Chiefs WRs finally show up

We've been begging for someone to step up in KC behind Travis Kelce and it finally happened against the Niners yesterday:

Not only did JuJu and MVS clear 100 yards, but Mecole Hardman scored THREE TIMES, two of which were rushing TDs. He becomes the first WR in the Super Bowl era with 2+ rush TDs and a receiving TD in a single game.

As for the secret sauce to the success? Call of Duty: Warzone with Patrick Mahomes.

🍺 5. Travis Etienne breakout party

What's wild about Etienne's big day (14-114-1), is that it could have been even bigger. He had a fumble on a run that would have been a TD and lost a goal line touch to a Trevor Lawrence sneak. Still, his every-down back usage today points to a RB1 profile. Wheels up.

🍺 6. The plucky Panthers shock everyone

Most media coverage from this game will focus on the Bucs bizarre collapse, but let's tip our caps to the Panthers. In their first game without both CMC and Robbie Anderson where they were 13-point underdogs, they absolutely whooped Tom Brady & co. 21-3. DJ Moore (7-69-1) found the endzone and both D'Onta Foreman (15-118; 2-27) and Chuba Hubbard (9-63-1; 2-10) ran all over the hapless Bucs.

🚀 Your newest RB1. He's got "league winner" written all over him.

😡 The Falcons offense is a joke. You can't do this.

🙈 Do not look at Mark Andrews' stat line from yesterday. I told you not to look!

✈️ Week 7 Air Yards leaders. Some interesting names, but mainly a painful reminder of that Mike Evans dropped TD.

🏖 Rodgers & Brady are planning an early vacation together

Remember when we thought the 2021 season was potentially the last we saw of Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady?

They’re probably both reconsidering their retirement plans at this point. The pair of veteran quarterbacks lost their respective games on Sunday to backup quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and PJ Walker, with only 13 points scored between their teams combined. Gross.

Brady and the Buccaneers look like a shell of their former Super Bowl-caliber team. They have gone eight straight games without a first-quarter touchdown — the longest drought in Brady’s career. He hasn’t had a losing record through the first seven games since 2002, and now the team he unretired from after 40 days sit below .500 with a 3-4 record.

Not to mention … THEY JUST LOST TO THE REBUILDING CAROLINA PANTHERS?!

Rodgers also had an offseason full of drama and trade rumors, but the product the Packers are putting on the field is probably making him reconsider everything. On Sunday, the offense averaged just 4.4 yards per play, far lower than the 5.6 yards the Commanders allowed through Week 6.

Blame the receiving core, blame Rodgers, but just realize nothing is clicking yet, and it’s frustrating to watch. So frustrating sometimes that Rodgers doesn’t even want to watch?

So no, I did not have both future Hall of Fame quarterbacks to be 3-4 through seven weeks of the season on my 2022 NFL bingo card. Can they turn it around? Sure. But, I also heard Italy is beautiful in February (if you know what I mean).

⭐ America has a new team — OUR New York Giants

The New York Giants are 6-1. I REPEAT, THE GIANTS ARE 6-1! How the hell did we get here? Brian Daboll is coaching his tail off, and the offense is doing just enough to get by.

I previewed the Giants vs. Jaguars game last Monday and implored readers to take New York as underdogs because, while it may not make sense, we still have to ride the wave.

Want to try and stifle Saquon Barkley? That’s fine, Daniel Jones will just run for 107 yards and a touchdown.

I think ‘patient’ is the best way to describe this team.

Going into Week 7, they had been outscored in the first half 64-40, and while they held a 2-point lead over Jacksonville at the half, they just continued to play their game. A variety of routes created quick passes and second half adjustments spoke for themselves. They have trailed in all six of their wins this season and still have found a winning record.

No matter how you slice it, it’s time to give them credit. Their win total for the season was 6.5 games! The Giants haven’t won more than six games since 2015. We may now have to start talking about a potential playoff run with this team. Tip of the cap to Daboll and the whole team. America (or maybe just me) is behind you.

Well, I guess it could be worse? the Patriots are hosting the Bears as 8.5 point home favorites in a game with a 40.5 over/under.

Damien Harris (hamstring) is expected to return after missing a couple games and this is a game where the Patriots should have their way on the ground.

💸 Arizona Cardinals (+4.5) vs Minnesota Vikings

Bill Parcells had a famous quote – “you are what your record says you are.” That’s a good thing for the Vikings, who currently sit at 5-1 for the year. You’re going to find them near the top of most power rankings simply because they have one of the best records in football.

However, the Vikings are clearly a fraudulent 5-1. They’ve actually been outgained by their opponents this season, something that the Dolphins did by more than 200 yards in their last contest. They ultimately rank 25th in the league in yardage differential, and they’re just 17th in Football Outsiders team DVOA.

The Vikings are a team that seem due for some massive regression, and that could start in Week 8 vs. the Cardinals. The Arizona offense has the potential to be much better with DeAndre Hopkins back in the lineup, and the fact that they played on Thursday night in Week 7 slightly offsets the bye-week advantage for Minnesota.

This line originally had the Vikings as just one-point favorites against the Cardinals, but they’ve moved to -4.5 given how both teams have started the year. I expect the sharps to grab the additional spread value with the Cardinals, so this line should move in their favor as the week progresses.

💸 Green Bay Packers (+10.5) vs Buffalo Bills

What in the world has happened to the Packers? They lost Davante Adams in the offseason, and he apparently was the glue that was holding everything together. They dropped their third-straight game on Sunday, this time to the Taylor Heinicke-led Commanders. The team has failed to cover in four straight weeks, and they’re now just 2-5 against the spread for this season.

With that in mind, it’s not surprising that the oddsmakers are starting to push back. The line for this game was originally listed as Bills -4.0, but it’s all the way up to -10.5 following the Packers’ most recent disappointment. If the Packers haven’t been able to beat the Jets, Giants, and Commanders, how in the world are they going to handle the Bills coming off a bye week?

That said, the big question is has this line moved too far in the other direction? The early betting action suggests it’s possible. The sharp money has come in on the Packers to start the week, so it’s possible that this line moves back in the other direction.

The Packers have previously suffered three-game losing streaks with Aaron Rodgers under center, with the last occurring in 2018. Rodgers has covered the spread in each of his last two chances following a three-game losing streak, so it’s possible that the hate has gone a bit too far. I think this line ultimately dips below 10 by kickoff.
