A Sneaky Super Bowl MVP?

Hear me out...

Maybe I’m being naive, but I think there’s a pretty good angle for betting the Super Bowl MVP … if you think Seattle wins (and most people do).

Here are the current odds via the DraftKings Sportsbook:

  • Sam Darnold +120

  • Drake Maye +235

  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba +550

  • Kenneth Walker III +650

It makes sense that the most likely player to win the award is the QB on the favored team, but my eyes (and wallet) immediately gravitate to JSN and Walker at better odds.

Darnold has been a revelation in the past two games (and even forced me to apologize last week), but I don’t think he’s a lock to win this in the event Seattle triumphs.

For much of the regular season, JSN was the engine of the offense and the clear MVP of the team. Darnold had a good season, but JSN is clearly the straw that stirs the drink in Seattle’s passing game.

Even looking at our projections for the Super Bowl, both JSN and Walker project for more points than Darnold.

Darnold is not the same caliber of QB as the most recent winners of the award (Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes), and I don’t think his reputation carries enough weight to earn him the MVP in scenarios where no obvious candidate emerges.

If anything, this sets up more similarly to Super Bowl LVI, where Matthew Stafford had a mixed game (3 TDs and 2 INTs) and the voters gave the award to Cooper Kupp (8-92-2), who was coming off a historic season where he won the triple crown.

I’ll concede Darnold deserves to be the favorite, but I think the odds gap between him and JSN (Walker, too) is far too wide. I’ll be fading the QB chalk and taking stabs on the true playmakers.

For the second time—sorry, Sam.

SUPER BOWL

All-In On Rhamondre Stevenson’s Recent Utilization

Welcome to the Utilization Report, where Dwain McFarland highlights emerging trends for the Seahawks and Patriots from the NFL Playoffs heading into the Super Bowl, including two prop bets and fantasy projections.

1. Rhamondre Stevenson is the RB1 in New England.

In the most pivotal weeks of the NFL Season—the playoffs—Stevenson has accounted for 72% of the snaps versus 29% for TreVeyon Henderson. In the AFC Championship game against Denver, Stevenson hogged a season-high 94% of the snaps, limiting Henderson to only 6%.

Over the three-game span, Stevenson has averaged 17 rushing attempts and 3.3 targets per game with a 78 Utilization Score. His historical comparisons averaged 15 fantasy points per game (PPG), well above his 11.7 since the Patriots' Wild Card game.

On the flip side, Henderson has averaged eight attempts and one target per game with a 28 Utilization Score.

  • Rhamondre Stevenson

    • Xfinity Best (ceiling): 22.5, 20.8

    • Median: 14.1, 12.8

    • Floor: 10.3, 9.3

  • Treveyon Henderson

    • Xfinity Best (ceiling): 9.2, 8.5

    • Median: 4.7, 4.3

    • Floor: 3.3, 3.0

Rhamondre Stevenson Prop Bet: Over 49.5 rushing yards (-113)

Stevenson's rushing yards prop is currently between 48.5 and 49.5 yards, priced at -110 to -115. He has beaten that line in every playoff game (53, 70 and 71 yards) against tough defenses. The veteran back projects for 58.9 in our model, making him a four-star bet to go over 49.5 rushing yards in our Player Prop tool.

SUPER BOWL

From Album Of The Year To Halftime Performer

If you know us, you know that there's nothing we love more than a good Super Bowl halftime show.

We got an amazing performance from Kendrick Lamar last year and for Super Bowl 60, we're lucky enough to have one of the biggest artists on the planet, Bad Bunny, performing.

Of course, there are also ways to wager and have some skin in the game for the halftime show, too—it is the Super Bowl after all! Let's dive into Kendall Valenzuela’s and cooterdoodle’s thoughts on what to expect from Bad Bunny's Super Bowl 60 halftime show.

First Song Prediction: "BAILE INoLVIDABLE"

I know, this is a chalk pick if we're looking through all the incredible songs Bad Bunny has, but I do believe he opens with this song for the Super Bowl. If you haven't blessed your ears yet, go listen to his most recent album "DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS" (I Should Have Taken More Photos).

If we are looking for a dark-horse pick for the first song, "MONACO" comes to mind. The opening of this song has a sample of Charles Aznavour’s 1964 rendition of “Hier encore,” and Bad Bunny's first verse fits perfectly into a Super Bowl performance when he says “Dime, dime, este es lo que tu querías” (this is what you wanted”).

Predicting Super Bowl 60 Halftime Show Guest Performer: Cardi B

Not only is Cardi B on the 2018 track "I Like It" with Bad Bunny, but she's also dating Stefon Diggs, who will likely be fighting for his life against Seattle's defense for 30 minutes prior to the rapper taking the stage.

It seems only fitting that Diggs and Cardi B share a little of the spotlight together in Levi's Stadium, right? It's not every year that your dad makes the Super Bowl and your mom has musical connections to the halftime performer. Do it for the scrapbook.
